Shenzhen University Library was founded in September, 1983. For many years, the library has served as a center for teaching, research, and academic activities; the second classroom for student readers; and an open academic library for both the university members and all the citizens in Shenzhen.

The library building is located in the center of the campus, set up in 1986. It has seven stories and 23,441 square meters of floor space, with central air-conditioners. There are 18 reading-rooms of all kinds, such as online search terminals, audio-visual materials playing system, and a self-learning room with 2,000 seats totally. In order to meet the increasing need of learning materials and seats, a new library building of 25,000 square meters will open soon in 2008.

The library holds about 528,287 kinds, comprising 2,183,000 issues, of books published both in Chinese and other foreign languages, 3,164 kinds of newspapers and periodicals, and approximately 60,000 copies of non-printed collections. And there are about 1,260,000 e-books and 46,000 e-journals with full-text. The featured resources of the library are 66,000 pressworks published in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, and materials of researches on special economic zones in China mainland. On the average, every students holds 102 printed books and 50 e-books.

From the late 1990's the library has paid great attention to the development of modern information services. The library connects with DIALOG and STN international online search systems, and contains many famous academic CD-ROM databases, online databases, and Internet retrieval terminals. In addition, the library provides a lot of multimedia CD-ROMs to increase learning materials and give out a change on learning modes.

In 1987 the library began to operate a modern integrated automatic management system. The system, named "SULCMIS", was self-developed and the library independently owns its copyright and intelligent property. It passed technical identification supported by national department of education, and because of its stable performance, convenient operation, and suitability for Chinese libraries, it gained many prizes as an excellent teaching production in China. At present, SULCMIS has been installed in several hundred libraries and related information service organizations. Up to this day, it is the third version "SULCMIS III".
